They arise where humans, Gargants, Ogors, Duardin, and Aelves unite under Sigmar's banner and transform ruins into lasting settlements. Many of these cities were founded after the Realmgate Wars and are located at strategic points like Realmgates, as these make paths and supplies possible in the first place. Some grew into enormous metropolises, most notably Hammerhal, which was built as a twin city across two realms simultaneously and became a central power hub of the Sigmarite Empire.

Life in the Free Cities is an alliance under pressure. Behind the walls, there is trade, craftsmanship, guilds, temples, and schools of magic, but also rivalries, mistrust, and harsh politics. The cities are governed by councils and conclaves that are meant to ensure order, while outside, the wilderness, warbands, and ancient powers make every street dangerous. Therefore, the cities are not just residences, but fortresses, rallying points, and bases of operations. Many of their citizens are militiamen, every departure needs guarding, and even a small loss of supplies can push an entire city to the brink of crisis.

From this pressure arise the Dawnbringer Crusades. These are large treks of soldiers, pioneers, priests, craftsmen, and families who leave the walls to found new settlements and reclaim lost regions. The goal is to eventually turn an outpost into a new Free City. Many of these expeditions end in mass graves because the journey leads through hostile territory and because the realms themselves are unpredictable. Nevertheless, new crusades are always sent out, because without expansion, the Free Cities would remain isolated, and isolation ultimately means ruin.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1058/4434/3115/files/httpstradegames-workshopcomassets20260504050202001gercoswarscrolls1jpg-1838924.jpg?v=1784102849
