Historical Background

The USS Kidd (DD-661) joined the fleet as a Fletcher-class destroyer on April 23, 1943. Named in honor of Rear Admiral Isaac C. Kidd, it was involved in major operations during World War II, including Wake Island and Okinawa. A skull-and-crossbones flag flew from the mast, and the image of Captain William Kidd on the smokestack earned it the nickname "Pirate of the Pacific".
