Background:
The Leagues of Votann, also known as the Descendants of the First, are an ancient faction of hardened, technologically advanced humanoids who have often been referred to by others as "Squats". Some might call them "Dwarves". They originally hail from the early era of humanity and evolved over millennia in the dangerous depths of the galactic core – a region defined by deadly radiation, gravitational anomalies, and countless threats. In this environment, they survived only through adaptation, discipline, and a close connection to their technological heritage. A central part of their culture is the so-called Votann – ancient data-storage AI complexes that collect knowledge, decisions, and history over generations. They serve as inviolable spiritual and political authorities around which each League is formed. The Descendants of the First regard their Votann not merely as machines, but as sacred guardians of wisdom and identity. The society of the Leagues of Votann is divided into clans and Leagues, each possessing its own fleets, fortress worlds, and fighting forces. Their warriors – known as Hernkyn or Einhyr – fight in highly advanced armour, equipped with grav-technology, energy shields, and weapons that are equal to even the Space Marines. In doing so, they place great importance on comradely trust, contractual loyalty, and the protection of their ancestral lines. Although they are technically part of humanity, they do not consider themselves their subjects – their loyalty is solely to their own codes and the continued existence of their race. Whoever threatens their trade routes or breaks ancient alliances must expect relentless retribution. On the battlefield, they act stoically, methodically, and with ruthless efficiency, supported by millennia of knowledge and ancient technology.
