British & Inter-Allied Commandos

The Commandos earned an exceptional reputation for their daring and bravery in World War II. They were formed in 1940 by order of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill with the express purpose of engaging in battle against the seemingly unstoppable German forces that had ejected the British Expeditionary Force from France with such apparent ease. As a volunteer force, they recruited from all branches of the armed forces. Thus there were Army Commandos, Marine Commandos, and the Interallied Commando Regiment, which included nationalities such as Belgians, Poles, Dutch, and others.

The Commandos fought in campaigns in Europe, Burma, and Africa and were honored for many famous actions, including arguably the greatest raid of all - St. Nazaire.

Commandos were used in many different ways - from units of less than a full section to entire assault divisions, depending on the task at hand. Excellently trained, aggressive in action, well-equipped, and deadly in close combat, the Commandos were rightly feared by their German, Italian, and Japanese adversaries.
